Week 2 of Our Sewing Classes: Fabrics, Terminology & Your First Project!
Date: May 2nd
Time: 17:00 PM – 19:00 PM
Location: Kineton Village Hall
Duration: 2 hours
Welcome to Week 2 of our sewing classes! Now that we’ve gotten comfortable with our sewing machines, it’s time to dive deeper into the foundation of sewing—understanding fabrics, learning essential terminology, and choosing a project to work on.
Exploring Different Types of Fabric
Fabric choice is crucial in sewing. The type of material you use affects the durability, texture, and ease of sewing. This week, we’ll explore:
Cotton & Linen – Perfect for beginners, easy to handle.
Canvas & Denim – Great for bags and structured projects.
Jersey & Stretch Fabrics – Soft and comfortable, but require special handling.
Silk & Satin – Luxurious but slippery to sew.
Faux Leather & Vinyl – Used in accessories and upholstery, needs special needles.
We’ll discuss which fabrics are best suited for different projects and how to prepare them before sewing.
Sewing Terminology: Speak Like a Pro!
Sewing has its own language, and this week, you’ll get access to a sewing glossary that breaks down essential terms such as:
Seam allowance – The extra fabric between the stitching and fabric edge.
Interfacing – Material used to add structure to fabric.
Basting – Temporary, loose stitches for holding fabric in place.
Topstitching – Decorative or reinforcing stitches visible on the fabric’s surface.
Grainline & Bias – The direction of the fabric weave and how it affects drape.
By learning these terms, you’ll feel more confident following patterns and instructions!
Set Your First Project!
This week, you’ll also choose your first project based on your skill level and interest. Options include:
✔ A Tote Bag – Perfect for beginners, introduces basic sewing skills.
✔ A Cushion Cover – Practice straight stitching and fabric folding.
✔ A Card Wallet – Small and practical, great for trying out interfacing.
✔Simple Basic Top.
